If you haven't heard this week is National Agriculture Week. March 18th through the 21st has been set aside by the Agriculture Council of America to bring attention to the important of agriculture in America. Yesterday, March 18th as National Ag Day a day to recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by agriculture.

Agriculture is something close to my heart. I have always loved to have a garden even though my brown thumb and local deer get most of what I grow. Over the years I have enjoyed growing tomatoes, pumpkins, sunflowers, various herbs and watermelon. I actually went to college at an Ag Tech, SUNY Delhi. My major is no longer offered but I am proud of my Associate of Applied Science in Equine Management. Had life taken a different turn I might have found my self in Texas ranching and farming for a living. (A girl can dream can't she? LOL)

All that said this week brings to mind a well know speech by legendary radio broadcaster Paul Harvey, "So God Made a Farmer". It is a speech he gave in 1978 to the Future Farmers of America. It was borrowed from a published piece Harvey did in 1975 for the Gadsden Times. That published piece was originally inspired by part of a 1940 article "Definition of a Dirt Farmer" published in The Farmer Stockman. Many of you will have heard this speech for the first time during Super Bowl XLVII. It was the narrative during a Dodge Ram Truck Ad. For the use of the speech Dodge agreed to donate to the FFA $100,000 for every 1,000,000 views of the ad on YouTube up to $1,000,000, a goal that was met in less than five day.

So as spring arrives tomorrow think about your garden and support your local farmer.
