A tense situation unfolded Wednesday morning in Dutchess County, NY, after the New York State State Police announced on social media that troopers from Troop K were conducting a search in the Town of Dover, NY, after they received a call that reported someone was yelling for help in a wooded area.

Someone Yelling for "Help" in Dover, NY

Police said that at around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, a call reported hearing someone calling for help in a wooded area near Holsapple Road and Chestnut Ridge Road in the Town of Dover, NY. At the time, police informed residents that there is no threat to the public, but they should expect to see a heavy police presence in the area while they investigate. They also asked residents who might have a family member or loved one who went out in the area and hasn't returned to contact them.

Multiple agencies using ground units, K9, UAS, and aviation searched the area for a few hours, including members from the New York State Forest Rangers, New York State Environmental Conservation Officers, and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, but found no signs of anyone in distress or any suspicious activity.

Police said that during the search, they interviewed nearby residents who told them that several individuals were yelling in the woods along Chestnut Ridge Road while searching for a lost dog. Police concluded that the timing and location of their activity matched the reports of calls for help.

It's unclear if the lost dog was recovered or not, but shortly after the discovery, police ended the search and cleared the scene.
