A good Samaritan steps in to assist two drivers involved in a morning accident on Interstate 84 in Orange County, NY.

An early morning accident along I-84 could have been much worse for two drivers if it wasn't for the "calm, quick thinking and compassion" of one passerby.

Car Fire on I-84 in Orange County, NY

It started early Monday, February 9th, 2026, when numerous commuters traveling along 84 reported that traffic was at a standstill after two cars were involved in an accident. The accident reportedly happened on the eastbound side of 84.

As you can see in the pictures above, both of the cars involved were engulfed in flames and could have been worse for all involved if it weren't for the helpful hand of a state employee.

New York State DOT Employee Lends Helping Hand

Brian Hoornbeek, a NYSDOT Equipment Operator Instructor, was one of the first people to stop after witnessing the accident on I-84 near Route 747, according to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Facebook page.

"Yesterday morning, NYSDOT Equipment Operator Instructor Brian Hoornbeek witnessed a crash on I-84 near Route 747," said the NYSDOT. "Without hesitation, Brian pulled over to help. Two vehicles had come to rest on a snowbank, and a fire quickly broke out."

"Calm, Quick Thinking and Compassion" Appreciated

The post explained that after seeing the crash happen, Hoornbeek proceeded to help get both of the drivers out of harm's way and into his state vehicle while they waited for first responders to arrive at the scene.

He also provided both drivers with first aid and stayed with them until State Police, local fire departments, and EMS arrived and took over.

"We are proud of Brian’s calm, quick thinking and compassion," said the NYSDOT. "It is a powerful reminder that the people behind the work zones are always looking out for others."
