4 Things to Love in Monticello, New York
One of Sullivan County's best has a lot to love!
Most of the towns and villages in the Hudson Valley have undergone significant changes over the years and one place that's seen a lot of change is the village of Monticello, New York. Many years ago Monticello was the number one summer vacation destination for many New York City residents. Many families would head to Monticello every year to go camping or to stay at one of the many smaller family resort locations that the area had available.
Today Monticello isn't quite as big of a vacation destination as it once was but it is still home to a bunch of things that are definitely worth your time. Things like:
Bagel Captial of New York
I'm not sure if everyone knows this or not, but New York State is the "Bagel Capital of the World" and according to many Monticello is the capital within the capital. Many claim that the best bagels in New York are made right in the heart of Monticello. We received a ton of text messages from folks letting us know that the Monticello Bagel Bakery is the one place that has the world's best bagel. The Bagel Bakery was founded in 1967 by the Fleischman family and is still owned by second and third-generation Fleischman's according to their website.
Bagel Festival
Monticello loves their bagels so much that every year they host the "Bagel Festival". The festival shows off some of the world's best bagels and according to its Facebook page is back this year. It'll happen on Sunday, August 14th starting at 9 a.m. There's going to be food, fun, entertainment, and of course bagels!
Holiday Mountain
In the winter months, skiers and snowboarders will love riding at Holiday Mountain. They offer many choices of different levels of trails for all riders and in the warmer months, Holiday Mountain offers outdoor fun like bumper boats, go-karts, mini-golf, batting cages, a rock-climbing wall, and much more. Holiday Mountian is located at 99 Holiday Mountain Rd, Monticello, NY.
Live Horse Racing
If you enjoy betting the ponies you have to check out Monticello Raceway, located off Exit 104 of Route 17. Many call it "The Mighty M" and they host harness horse racing Monday through Thursday most months. For a complete schedule of events check out their website here.
Indoor Waterpark
If you are looking for a place to bring the family for some water park fun, The Kartrite Resort & Indoor Waterpark might be a good place to check out. New York's largest indoor water park is located near Resorts World and offers guests the chance to enjoy some indoor waterpark fun with pools, slides, and more. (Side note: Parents Resorts World is right up the road...LOL!
