People who are from that area in Esopus may already be aware but others who travel on the weekends through Ulster County on 9W should be prepared for delays from approximately 10 AM through 3 PM. Driver should expect delays due to a funeral service that is being held to honor the late Wayne T. Freer.

The Life of Wayne T. Freer Being Honored in the Town Of Esopus

Wayne Freer passed away on January 22, 2025. He was a beloved man in the community and had given years of service to many organizations. Wayne and his wife and family called Esopus their home.

The obituary published by Gilpatric Van-Vliet Funeral Home shared Wayne's many accomplishments. He had an extensive law enforcement background that reportedly spanned 50 years.  He was with the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, the Ulster Sherriff's Office, and the Kingston Police Department.

Wayne spent 12 years in his retirement as the director of Safety at SUNY Ulster and served as a Town of Esopus Town Councilman for 16 years. Wayne also found time to serve the community with what was reported to be his true passion, fire service.

A 55 Year member of the Town of Esopus Fire Department Has Died

He was a member of the Esopus Fire Department for 55 Years. A former Chief, he was a Safety Officer and most recently Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners. A life member of the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad, plus served as Director of the Ulster County Arson Task Force.

He was most known for his role as Ulster County Deputy Fire Coordinator, 56-3. Wayne had a positive impact on multiple generations of first responders. His life is defined by his service to the community. (Gilpatric-Van-Vliet Funeral Home)
