New Roundabout Planned at Intersection in Dutchess County
A high-traffic intersection in Dutchess County, NY, is expected to trade in the traffic lights and stop signs for a traffic-friendly roundabout.
The topic of intersections becoming roundabouts in the Hudson Valley has been a hot topic of conversation between drivers who love them and drivers who hate them for as long as I can remember.
Roundabouts in the Hudson Valley, NY
Last year, I shared how the construction of the new roundabout at the intersection of Hooker and Raymond Ave in Poughkeepsie changed me from team hate to team love. Why?
As someone who drives in the area every day, I found that traffic is much more manageable. Yes, there are still some drivers who have no idea how to properly drive into and out of them, which creates a problem, but the positives have far outweighed the negatives.
Roundabouts Make Roads Safer in New York
Earlier this year, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) posted statistics on Facebook showing that roundabouts are safer than traditional intersections, stating,
"We know not everyone likes roundabouts, but here’s the truth: one story about a backup or a crash doesn’t erase the facts. Roundabouts are proven safer than traditional intersections."
According to the NYSDOT, there are more than 150 roundabouts across New York State, and because of them, there have been 76% fewer injuries, 90% fewer fatalities, and 35% fewer crashes at intersections.
Statistics like these are why more and more areas in the Hudson Valley are planning to add more roundabouts to problem intersections.
New Roundabout in Fishkill, NY?
The intersection of Route 82 and Route 52 in Fishkill, NY (above) could be the next roundabout to get the green light in Dutchess County, NY. According to the NYSDOT, a construction project is being planned to make intersection improvements in the Town of Fishkill, NY.

The project expects to "address vehicle conflict and queuing issues at the three intersections of NYS Route 52 and NYS Route 82 in the Town of Fishkill," according to the NYSDOT website.
This project is in the development stages and is exploring alternatives, including "adding a modern roundabout or consolidating the intersections into a three-legged signalized intersection".
When Will Construction Start & How Much Will it Cost?
Once development is complete, the NYSDOT is expecting to begin construction in the winter of 2026/2027 and expects it to be completed by the summer of 2028. The project is expected to cost approximately $6.5 million and will receive funding from federal and state sources.
