I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and when it came time for July Fourth celebrations, sparklers were a big part of it. I remember my Mom and Dad handing out sparklers to us kids, all the while counting them, so they would know if all of the used ones ended up in the coffee can and not strewn about our front yard.

I loved them, I still love them, I loved spinning in circles, writing my name in the air with them, and when I got to have one in each hand, I thought it was just the best thing ever. Folks in Ulster County are about to be able to experience the very same thing.

According to the Daily Freeman, Ulster County is joining the surrounding counties who allow the devices to be sold to those over 18 from June 1 to July 5 and Dec. 26 to Jan. 2 of each calendar year. Vendors are currently getting certified with the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control to sell sparklers and are obtaining vendor permits at the local municipal levels.

Here's to a sparkly July Fourth!
