Was The Neighborhood Right About This Dollar General Store

The news came down this week that Dollar General would be closing some of its stores around the United States. No one expected them to close this store.

Less than 10 years ago residents of the Town of Esopus discussed the pros and cons of having a Dollar General in the Neighborhood. I know because I was at the meeting where many people were opposed to it being built. Now 6 years after being built the announcement that the Dollar General at 1162 Broadway in Esopus is on the list to be closed.

Many argued at the time that a Dollar General wasn't needed. They referenced the existing store in Port Ewen which is just a few miles up the road. They also knew that a Dollar General was going to be opening in Highland on 9W at the same time.

This would put three Dollar General stores on Route 9W within a 14-mile stretch. Basically, the stores were going to be about 7 miles apart on the same road. The plans went through and now surprisingly the store in the middle is closing. Rumor is that it is due to sales.

There is no doubt that the Dollar General Store at 1162 Broadway had loyal shoppers. I have even stopped on occasion but unfortunately, none of us stopped in enough. You also can't argue that the store was an improvement to the lot.

Sadly, it will most likely sit empty for a while, hopefully, not for long. The store is located right next to the Esopus Fire Department. Many people are hoping it can become a much-needed local business that might fit in better in the neighborhood.

Some on Facebook community pages are hoping for things such as a bait shop or maybe a new Apple Bin which was a popular farm store with a deli that closed in 2022. Others would like to see small local supermarkets like My Market in New Paltz, the Accord Market in Accord, or even the MyTown Market Place in Rosendale.

So the short of it is the people who said the town didn't need it look to be right after all. For the rest of us who enjoyed having the convenience just know that the store is offering deep discounts and plans to be closed by the end of April.
