Discount Retailer With 500+ New York Stores Closing Nearly 100 Locations
A popular discount retailer has announced plans to close nearly 100 stores in 2025.
It's that time of the month to reveal which store will be the next to announce they are preparing to close stores across the county. So far in March, we have already learned that Forever 21, Joann Fabrics, and Advance Auto Parts are closing many and we can now add a discount retailer to the list after they announced their planning to shutter stores.
Dollar General Closing Stores
According to News 10, Dollar General has announced its plans to close nearly 100 of its 19,000+ U.S. locations soon. Company officials made the announcement in its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2024 report saying they plan to close 96 Dollar General store locations in the first quarter of the current fiscal year. They are also expected to close 45 of its home decor stores, "pOpshelf".
The company didn't say which of its 19,643 locations would be closing or when but did say that the decision to close stores came after it conducted a "store portfolio optimization review, which involved identifying stores for closure or re-bannering based on an evaluation of individual store performance, expected future performance, and operating conditions, among other factors."

Dollar General’s chief executive officer, Todd Vasos explained the company's plan saying,
"As we look to build on the substantial progress we made on our Back to Basics work in fiscal 2024, we believe this review was appropriate to further strengthen the foundation of our business. While the number of closings represents less than one percent of our overall store base, we believe this decision better positions us to serve our customers and communities."
New York Dollar General Stores
Some retail experts were surprised by the announcement as Dollar General is the one company that has opened more new locations across the country in the last few years, more than most others. Dollar General's expansion has been big in New York as we've seen a spike in stores across the state including stores in the Hudson Valley. Currently, Dollar General has 597 New York locations including locations in Marlboro, Pleasant Valley, Hyde Park, Poughkeepsie, Wappingers Falls, NY, and many more.
When the company reveals which stores will be closing we will update this article.
