Domino Sugar Plant Closing in Yonkers, NY
The American Sugar Refining (ASR) has begun a nationwide restructuring plan that will include closing the Domino Sugar plant in Yonkers, NY, which employs approximately 300 employees.
ASR announced on Friday, June 20th, confirming that the 130-year-old sugar refinery would close by December 31, 2025, according to News 12. In a statement, the company said,

Yonkers, NY Mayor Issues Domino Sugar Factory Statement
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano issued a statement regarding the facility closing, saying, "The Domino Sugar Refinery has been part of Yonkers for over two decades, and the location itself has operated as a sugar refinery for over 130 years."
Spano admitted that it's tough to have a company like ASR leave Yonkers, but did say that the 22-acre property the refinery currently sits on along the Hudson River is "one of the most valuable properties from here to Albany."

Spano hinted that the future of the site is bright and that it could be used for housing and recreation, saying,
"Housing and recreation are the best uses of the Hudson waterfront these days, and our role will be to see that the interests of all Yonkers residents are met moving forward."
What Happens to the 300 Domino Sugar Employees?
Once the facility, which processes more than 4 million pounds of sugar daily, closes, approximately 300 employees will need to find new employment within ASR or at a new company.
Mayor Spano said that over the next six months, Domino will work alongside the New York State Department of Labor to provide "resume-building" and "job placement services" for the affected employees.
