Price Chopper/Market 32 Expanding in New York

Price Chopper/Market 32 is moving closer to building a new $12 million production facility in the Rotterdam Corporate Park located in Schenectady County, New York.

If approved, the proposed 42,000-square-foot facility would act as a "central commissary" for the grocery store chain, allowing it to prepare fresh baked goods and heat-and-eat meals for the local Price Chopper and Market 32 stores, according to WTEN.

The facility would create more than 100 new jobs and produce various foods for the local Price Chopper and Market 32 stores, including fresh green salads, frosted and decorated cupcakes, and sliced deli meats and cheese for its pre-sliced deli cases.

Its central kitchen would also allow the company to mix, stretch, boil, and par-bake its New York-style bagels. Once completed, the bagels would be frozen and shipped to local stores for the final bake.

Standout Example in Innovation

The model that the proposed facility would follow has been recognized as "effective," according to company spokesperson Pam Cerrone, who told WTEN,

"Our existing commissary model has proven effective and was recently recognized in Progressive Grocer as a standout example in innovation in operations. This is a strategic investment in the future of our fresh food operations and will further enhance quality, consistency and efficiency across stores."

The company also said that once the proposed production facility begins supporting the grocer's local stores, it will eventually expand and serve all of the 129 Price Chopper and Market 32 stores across six states.

When Will it Open?

The project was recently reviewed by the Schenectady Metroplex Board, which approved a sales tax and mortgage recording exemption for the company with a resolution at a meeting on June 11th.

"Now that the planning and approval process is near completion, we are priming to begin construction," Cerrone said.

The company is expecting the facility to be fully operational by Fall 2025.
