Will The Hudson Valley Start Charging For Paper Bags?

New York is starting its ban on plastic bags in less than a year so consumers are looking to paper bags as an alternative.

Part of New York State's approaching ban on plastic bags is a provision to allow counties and cities to determine if they want to charge 5 cents per paper bag at the checkout aisle. According to the Democrat and Chronicle, 27 of the 62 counties in New York have said they do not plan on charging customers for paper bags. 28 more counties said they are undecided, and 3 counties are determining how this fits into their previous rule to charge for bags.

Within the Hudson Valley, one county has already determined that they will charge for paper bags. The Democrat and Chronicle reports that Ulster County will charge 5 cents per paper bag in the checkout aisle. Rockland County is one of the counties that is trying to figure out how the state law will impact their own rule for charging for single-use bags.

Sullivan, Orange, Putnam, and Delaware County have told the Democrat and Chronicle that they will not charge for bags. Dutchess, Columbia, and Westchester County are undetermined if they will charge for single-use bags.
