One of the biggest parts of Dutchess County, both the city and town of Poughkeepsie have lots to offer just about everyone.

If you never visited Poughkeepsie before and are looking to spend a day exploring, not only will you find a ton of historic places, great trails to walk on, and numerous restaurants to grab a bite to eat, but you'll also find these four things that make people that live in the "Queen City" love it.

A Park for Everyone

If spending a day at a park is something you enjoy then Poughkeepsie has a park for you. We talked to Janet who is the Town of Poughkeepsie's recreation director and she told us that the town is home to 21 different parks. Parks like Carriage Hill, Crown Heights, Greenvale, Peach Hill, and Red Oaks Mill offer a variety of outdoor fun for everyone. A big THANK YOU to Janet and her team at the recreation department for doing a fantastic job at maintaining some of the Hudson Valley's best parks. If you are looking for a park near you, check out the recreation department online here.

Poughkeepsie had an Amusement Park?

Yes, Poughkeepsie was once home to a huge amusement park. I didn't believe it either until back about two years ago when I stumbled on some information about "The Woodcliff Pleasure Park". The 27-acre "pleasure park" was set on what is now the northernmost portion of the Marist College campus. The park offered guests all kinds of rides and more, it was open for business from 1927-1941. One of the Last 7-Elevens in the Hudson Valley

If you are a fan of the "Slurpee" one of the only places to get an authentic 7-eleven Slurpee is in Poughkeepsie. Poughkeepsie is home to one of the 3 remaining 7-eleven convenience stores in the Hudson Valley. Over the years the number of 7-eleven stores has shrunk significantly but luckily enough Poughkeepsioe still has one located at 266 Hooker Ave, Poughkeepsie, NY.

Oldest Continuously Operating Theater in New York State

The Bardavon 1869 Opera House located at 35 Market Street in Poughkeepsie, was built back in 1896 and for many years served as a venue for various performing arts, community meetings, and celebrations. Over the year's numerous projects have threatened to have the building demolished and because of that back in 1977, The Baradavon was named to the National Register of Historic Places according to Wikipedia. That will hopefully protect the building from ever being torn down. The Baradvon has been the home of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic for over 40 years and currently still offers guests the opportunity to take in a show on select dates. Get Baradavon show information here.
