A potentially tragic situation on the Walkway Over the Hudson ended safely last week thanks to the quick response and training of City of Poughkeepsie police officers.

According to the City of Poughkeepsie PBA, the incident happened around 3:49 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, after City 911 received a report of a person in crisis on the Walkway Over the Hudson.

Man Threatens to Jump From Walkway Over the Hudson

Police said multiple patrol units and members of the department's Hostage Negotiation Team responded immediately. While officers were on their way, dispatchers received information that the man had removed his shoes and was attempting to climb over the railing near the middle of the bridge.

When officers arrived, they made contact with the man and relied on their crisis intervention training to begin talking with him. Thankfully, after a short conversation, officers, were able to convince the man to safely come away from the railing area and escort him off the Walkway.

The man was then transported to a local hospital, where officers remained to assist with the intake process before he was turned over to hospital staff for further evaluation. The City of Poughkeepsie PBA praised the professionalism and compassion shown by the responding officers, whose training helped bring the situation to a peaceful ending.
