The Last Surviving Rescue Dog From Ground Zero Had a Huge 16th Birthday

Today we remember the day 14 years ago we lost some many lives. We also celebrate the heroes on that horrible day.

There's a Golden Retriever named Britney who's the last surviving search-and-rescue dog to work Ground Zero after 9/11. (Her name's spelled Bretagne, but it's pronounced Britney.)

According to the NY Post, her handler is a woman from Texas named Denise Corliss, and 9/11 was their first assignment together. Denise says she didn't just help with the search-and-rescue mission, but also helped her get through it.

And since Britney's 16th birthday was last month, the website BarkPost.com teamed up with a luxury hotel in New York to do something special for both of them.

They flew the two of them to New York, stocked their hotel room with dog treats, had room service bring Britney a gourmet burger, put a billboard of them in Times Square and threw a party where Britney got dog toys and a cake.

And to top it off, the 9/11 Museum dedicated a cobblestone to them, and the hotel donated $1,000 to Texas Task Force 1, where Britney was trained.

Over 100 dogs were involved in search-and-rescue after 9/11. The only other one alive is a 15-year-old English Springer Spaniel named Morgan. She did human remains detection on Staten Island, where they took all the World Trade Center wreckage.
