Six Flags Considering Closing Parks, Including New York Locations
A new report suggests that Six Flags Entertainment Corporation is considering closing some of its 42 amusement/water parks as part of its new long-term business plan.
Most of us have at least one fantastic memory of visiting one of the Six Flags amusement parks in New York or New Jersey. Six Flags has 27 amusement parks and 15 water parks in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and attract millions of visitors every year so yes they are a popular place to visit, but it appears that after a new earnings report, they are considering closing some locations.
Six Flags Closing Select Parks?
Six Flags, which earlier this year merged with Cedar Fair to become the largest regional amusement park operator in North America has released its first quarterly report since the merger. The newly formed Six Flags Entertainment Corporation's third-quarter report shows that the corporation's financials are "quite different than what was reflected in the first and second quarters of 2024" according to KTLA.

The corporation also announced in the new report that they have a long-range business plan to increase its profits moving forward called "Project Accelerate". The long-term business plan will "review the park portfolio over time, to optimize the asset base, narrow management’s focus, and help reduce net leverage." The review could lead the corporation to sell or close select parks across the country but there are currently no definitive plans to close any of the parks, just considerations.
Six Flags President and CEO Richard A. Zimmerman hasn't named any parks that could be in danger of closing but did say,
"Since completing the merger, we have been finding ways to operate more efficiently and reducing unnecessary costs while still delivering a high level of guest service."
Are Any New York, or New Jersey Six Flags in Danger of Closing?
There are currently two Six Flags parks across New York including the Great Escape Resort and Hurricane Harbor in Queensbury, NY, and Six Flags Darien Lake & Hurricane Harbor, the 1,200-acre amusement park and resort located in Darien, New York, between Buffalo and Rochester. Almost every year both of the New York locations are two of the company's highly rated destinations according to guests, so it doesn't appear that either should be in jeopardy of closing.
