Orange County Gun Buy Back Program This Weekend
This weekend Orange County county will be hosting a Gun Buy Back Program.
In a press release Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler, City of Newburgh Police Chief Doug Solomon and Major Pierce Gallagher of the New York State Police announced the Gun Buy Back Program 2019.
This Saturday, June 22, from 11am until 4:00 pm residents are allowed "to safely surrender guns and receive a Walmart gift card valued at up to $150.00, depending on the type of gun surrendered." Guns can be turned over at the City of Newburgh Community Center, located at 401 Washington Street.
There is no limit to the amount of guns dropped off, no questions asked and no identification necessary. However, active or retired law enforcement
officers or licensed gun dealers will not be allowed to take part in the event.
To be surrendered successfully, guns must be unloaded and come in a plastic or paper bag.
In the press release Chief Doug Solomon of the City of Newburgh Police Department discussed the importance of th Gun Buy Back program saying:
“Our gun buyback is a great opportunity to get guns off the street. These types of programs are also helpful in
preventing innocent people from being injured by gunfire. We would rather people turn in a gun
they no longer have a need for rather than run the risk of having it stolen during a burglary and
ending up in the wrong hands.”
The following is the breakdown of guns surrendered and gift cards received:
- Those surrendering operable assault weapons will receive a gift card in the amount of $150.00.
- Those surrendering operable handguns, or modified rifles or shotguns, will receive gift cards in the amount of $100.00.
- Those surrendering rifles, shotguns, antique, or non-working firearms will receive gift cards in the amount of $25.00.'
