On Tuesday, the Sparrowbush Fire District was dispatched for a possible rope rescue in the area of The Hawks Nest.
First responders responded to State Route 97, also known as The Hawks Nest.
Just after noon, the wife of 42-year-old Binh Ledin of Lumberland contacted the New York State Police Wurtsboro to report him missing.
Troopers located his vehicle, a 2010 Honda CRV at the Hawk’s Nest at approximately 1:45 p.m. and located Ledinh a short time later.
Ledinh could not be reached by foot because of the steep terrain.
The Orange County Technical Rescue Team lowered themselves to Mr. Ledinh and determined he was deceased, police say.
"The victim was recovered and the scene was turned over to State Police," the Port Jervis Fire Department stated.
He was then lowered into a rescue boat on the Delaware River where he was then transported to the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Binh Ledinh was flying a drone on State Route 97/ Hawk’s Nest in the early hours, police say.
At approximately 7:32 a.m., the drone crashed 17 feet down an embankment.
Ledinh attempted to retrieve the drone and fell approximately 250 feet, police say.
It took about four hours for the body of the victim to be recovered.
The Port Jervis Fire Department joined the Sparrowbush Fire District and many other local fire departments on the scene.
They worked alongside Sparrowbush, West Point, Newburgh, Lumberland, Huguenot, Matamoras and other members from Orange County.
"Thank you to all the responding departments as this was a lengthy call. Job well done by all," the Sparrowbush Fire District stated.
The Hawks Nest is found outside Port Jervis, New York.
It's located near the Delaware River.
