Deadly Fire Erupts at Home in Orange County, NY

A massive fire broke out at a home in Orange County early Friday morning, and sadly, one person was found dead inside the residence after firefighters were able to extinguish the flames.

According to the New York State Police, the tragic incident began at approximately 12:50 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026, when Troopers from the Greenville barracks responded to a report of a fully engulfed residential structure fire on Darraugh Lane in Sparrowbush, NY.

Unfortunately, when emergency crews arrived at the scene, the home was already fully engulfed in flames.

Volunteers from the Sparrowbush Fire Department, along with the Port Jervis Fire Department, responded to the scene and worked to put out the fire. Once they were able to knock down the flames, firefighters and investigators made a heartbreaking discovery inside the home.

Police said that a deceased individual was discovered inside the residence following the fire. At this time, authorities have not been able to positively identify the victim. State Police say the individual suffered severe burns in the fire, making identification difficult.

Investigators haven't found any evidence of foul play and are now working to determine exactly what caused the deadly fire.

The investigation remains active and is being handled by multiple agencies, including the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation from the Middletown barracks, the Orange County Fire Investigation Unit and the Orange County Medical Examiner's Office.
