New Grocery Store Opening in the Hudson Valley

A big-name grocery store chain announced Wednesday that it will be opening a new store in the Hudson Valley.

Folks that live in and around the Ellenville, NY area are elated after hearing the news that the vacant grocery store located off of Route 209 in the Town of Wawarsing, New York, will soon be home to a new supermarket chain.

Grocery Store Needed Near Ellenville, New York

Last year, we learned that after 30 years at the Ulster County location, ShopRite was planning to close the store permanently. The store closed on August 31st, 2024, soon after rumors began to circulate that town officials were working with plaza owners SR Equity Partners to try and bring a new supermarket to the site as soon as possible.

New Grocery Store Opening Near Ellenville, New York

Wawarsing town officials have finalized an agreement that will bring a Tops Friendly Market into the former ShopRite location. According to the Daily Freeman, the new Tops store will undergo $2 million worth of renovations before opening to the public, including massive changes. Tops issued a statement stating that the renovations will include, "a brand-new storefront, new interior and exterior paint with all new landscaping, energy-efficient equipment and LED lighting both inside and out, new shopping carts and corrals, expanded state-of-the-art self-checkouts, renovated restrooms, and an enlarged fresh perimeter with new updated décor."

Tops Friendly Markets president Ron Ferri said,

"We are thrilled to be adding the Ellenville location to the Tops family of stores. This latest store opening and its forthcoming enhancements will help make life a little easier for shoppers by focusing on a strong combination of convenience, selection, quality, and low prices every day."

 

When Will the New Tops Friendly Market Open in Ulster County, NY

The new store is expected to hold its grand opening at 1 Tops Market Blvd sometime in mid-June 2025. Once opened, Tops said the store will feature a wide variety of certified Kosher foods, an expanded beer section featuring local breweries, and what they called a “Healthy Hydration” section. They will also offer online ordering with fast pickup, delivery, and catering services. Tops will also introduce the area to its "Flashfood program", which cuts the prices by up to 60% on items nearing their best-by date.

Customers can also expect to find a wide selection of fresh produce, a full-service seafood and meat department with certified butchers, and a full-service deli.

The store near Ellenville, NY, will be the 5th Tops location in the Hudson Valley, joining stores open in Carmel, New Paltz, Lagrangeville, and Rhinebeck, New York.
