New Supermarket Replacing Ellenville ShopRite When It Closes?

The plaza currently home to a ShopRite grocery store is currently in talks to have a new supermarket take its place once it closes this summer.

Back in October 2023, we shared the news that ShopRite confirmed that they are planning to close numerous stores in New York including one of 12+ Hudson Valley locations.

Ulster County ShopRite Closing

The ShopRite store located on Route 209 in the Town of Wawarsing, New York is scheduled to close before the end of 2024, and to avoid not having a full-line supermarket in town local officials are currently working with plaza owners to make sure a new store will take its place according to the Daily Freeman. Town of Wawarsing Supervisor Terry Houck told the Freeman last week that the town along with Sen. Peter Oberacker has had conversations with plaza owners SR Equity Partners about how they can bring a new supermarket to the site as soon as possible.

Three Supermarket Companies Interested in Replacing ShopRite

Houck said that SR Equity representative Ken Chapman shared that at least three companies expressed interest in possibly replacing ShopRite when they close but didn't give specific store names. He did say that he contacted other supermarket chains that operate in the Hudson Valley but didn't confirm if any of those are the stores that expressed interest in replacing ShopRite.

"I'll be following up with him in the near future....I'll be working with him to get that store here," said Houck.

Wawarsing, New York a Food Desert?

When ShopRite closes it will leave Wawarsing, and Ellenville without a full-line grocery store with the closest stores being Walmart and Pete's Groceries located in Napanoch, NY. Houck expressed how that situation is unacceptable, " We need to continue to have a full-line grocery store. We need it for the residents and the employees that work there." Sen. Oberacker voiced his concerns about the area losing a grocery store saying,

"Too many of our rural communities have morphed into food deserts with a lack of shopping options for families and individuals. In my discussions with local elected officials and residents, it's abundantly clear that there is a need for a community grocery store in the Town of Wawarsing."

The Shoprite store located at 1 Shoprite Blvd, Ellenville, NY opened back in 1993 and is scheduled to close this summer according to reports.
