Thanksgiving doesn't fall on November 22nd as often as you'd think it would. As a matter of fact it happen in 2012 and 2018 but doesn't happen again until after 2025 but that isn't why I am mentioning the date I am actually discussing this Friday and Thanksgiving because Friday is November 22nd and that is officially National Cranberry Relish Day.

This amazing compliment to a Thanksgiving dinner was believed to have originated in New England which makes sense when you consider the amount of cranberries that are grown in that part of the US. Susan Stamberg is credited with getting the day to be recognized. She is known for a recipe that apparently is made with horseradish. It is known at Mama Stamberg's Cranberry Relish.

My grandma had a recipe that she passed down to my mom that had whole cranberries cooked down with lemon and orange peels. Once it was soft, it was minced and then place in unflavored gelatin. Then it was left to set in a holiday shaped pan. It wiggled and tasted wonderful.

If you are not a fan I say it is just because you haven't found your favorite recipe yet. That tart cranberry and the turkey or any meat for that fact go so well together. Celebrate this Friday even if you have to just stick with the can of cranberry jelly from Ocean Spray. I dare you to put it on a turkey sandwich from your favorite deli and not say it is good.
