One of the biggest names in retail has announced they are planning to close 65 stores by the end of January 2025, which is 15 more than previously reported.

Earlier this year we told you that Macy's, one of the most popular department stores in the country had announced plans to shutter select stores across the country. At first, the announcement stated they were planning to lay off over 2,300 employees and close approximately five stores in 2024.

Macy's Closing More Stores

That number quickly went up to 50 stores mid-year and now, as we close out 2024, Macy's has raised the number of stores closing to 65 stores according to CBS. The additional stores added to the list were announced by Macy's CEO Tony Spring on an earnings call last week with Spring saying, "We now expect to close roughly 65 locations this year. In line with our typical cadence, closures will occur post-holiday."

Macy's Stores in New York

The company didn't announce which locations would be closing but did say it would only affect stores where sales are "underperforming". Macy's currently operates 38 stores across New York including two Hudson Valley locations in Poughkeepsie and Middletown, New York leaving some wondering if either of those stores is in danger of closing. We spoke to an employee at the Poughkeepsie store and she told us the store has been "really busy" so let's hope that means they aren't part of the closures.

When Macy's clarifies which stores will be closing we will update this article, until then if you would like them to stay open, go shopping!!!...LOL! Macy's is located at the Poughkeepsie Galleria 2001 South Rd Ste 254 Poughkeepsie, NY, and at the Galleria at Crystal Run at 1 N Galleria Dr. Ste 131 Middletown, NY.
