Text Scam Affecting $1,400 IRS Payments in New York
Be on the lookout for a new string of text messages that advise you to sign up to receive your $1,400 special payment from the IRS.
Earlier this week we told you that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) had confirmed that it would be sending out $2.4 billion in "special payments" to eligible taxpayers.
IRS Sending Payments
The Economic Impact Payments (EIP), also known as stimulus payments will be available to any New Yorker who didn't receive the Recovery Rebate Credit in 2021, a COVID recovery relief payment. Most New Yorkers who did not receive one or more stimulus payments in 2021 should qualify and receive payments of up to $1,400. The IRS announced they were sending out these payments after noticing over one million taxpayers didn't claim the credit.
How to Claim the Special IRS Payment
If you qualify for the payment, the IRS said that taxpayers need to "take no action", but many are reporting that they have recently received numerous text messages from the "IRS" stating that they need to provide accurate information to receive the payment. The text message (below) states, "You are eligible to receive a $1,400 Economic Impact Payment. Please provide your accurate personal information. We will deposit the amount into your bank account or mail a paper check within 1 to 2 business days."

Do NOT Click on the Text Message Link
As we mentioned above, the IRS stated no action is needed to receive payments, so if you did receive a text message similar to this one it is a scam attempting to gain access to your personal information. Authorities are aware of messages like this and have advised that you do NOT reply to them and delete them as soon as you receive them.
The IRS has confirmed that payments have been mailed out, so if you are getting one, you should receive it by the end of January.
