It’s Illegal To Own Any Of These 7 Banned Snakes In New York State

A lot of people are scared of snakes, but there are plenty of people who aren't and in fact, keep them as pets. If you're one of those people who have a fondness for reptiles, you should know that New York State bans the ownership of certain types of snakes. As we approach World Snake Day, which is coming up on July 16, 2022, let's take a look at the snakes that are illegal to possess in the state.

You Can't Legally Own These 7 Snakes In New York State

All of the snakes below are considered "wild animals" by New York State and thus are illegal to breed or own as pets:

Breeding or owning any of the snakes below could result in a $500 fine for the first offense and $1,000 for any following offenses,

Notwithstanding any other provision of law, any person who knowingly breeds a wild animal or knowingly possesses, owns, harbors, sells, barters, transfers, exchanges, or imports a wild animal for use as a pet or intentionally releases or sets at-large any wild animal, authorized by this section for use as a pet, from the location where the animal is permitted to be possessed or harbored in violation of the provisions of this section shall be subject to a penalty of not more than five hundred dollars for the first offense and not more than one thousand dollars for a second and subsequent offenses.  Each instance of breeding, owning, harboring, sale, barter, release, transfer, exchange, or import of a wild animal in violation of this section shall constitute a separate offense.

5. Green anacondas & Yellow anacondas

6. Australian amethystine pythons

7. Indian pythons
