In July we will all be wishing for a cold day but maybe not one as cold as we are going to have as this week closes out. According to the National Weather Service the next 48 hours will have negative feeling temperatures. The freezing cold temperatures we will be experiencing over the next 48 hour will have us exposed to conditions that can result in frostbite.

Frostbite occurs when skin is exposed to cold and windy conditions for a prolonged period of time but with the weather we will have here in the Hudson Valley over the next day or two frostbite can happen with much shorter exposure. According to the Mayo Clinic frostbite can happen to skin whether it is covered or not. Below are the sign you should look from the Mayo Clinic.

Signs and symptoms of frostbite include:

  • At first, cold skin and a prickling feeling
  • Numbness
  • Red, white, bluish-white or grayish-yellow skin
  • Hard or waxy-looking skin
  • Clumsiness due to joint and muscle stiffness
  • Blistering after rewarming, in severe cases
