I like to travel in the winter. I love getting out on the road but you do have to keep an eye on the weather. My husband's favorite line to me when I say we are going somewhere in the dead of Winter is "Weather Permitting".

But let's face it we all can't always sit around and wait for the weather to clear. Sometimes you have to get on the road. Therefore it is good to understand winter weather terms so you can be prepared. Understanding winter weather warnings and advisories is key to planning any kind of winter weather travel, plane train or automobile.

NOAA Breakdown of What We Need to Know About Winter Weather Announcements

The US National Weather Service in Albany New York broke it down in a Facebook post last week. Not only did they explain watches and advisories but they even explained things like Lake Effect Snow.

The important thing to remember if you are planning to travel or even when you plan to stay home is that the National Weather Service also known as NOAA is ready with weather information for you 24/7/365.

If it is a Blizzard Warning stay home and off the roads. A Winter Storm Warning is similar to a blizzard in the way but it is considered less volatile. Still, probably a good idea to delay travel. Lastly, a Winter Weather Advisory also warns of an upcoming storm but doesn't necessarily mean you need to alter your travel plans.
