Armed Suspect Fatally Shot by Police in Poughkeepsie

An armed suspect has been fatally shot in a confrontation with police in Poughkeepsie, New York.

According to a press release from the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department, officers were dispatched to a home on Fair Oaks Drive in the Town of Poughkeepsie on Thursday at approximately 2:15 p.m. to a report of an active assault.

As officers responded, they were informed that a male suspect armed with a sword was attacking members of the Dutchess County Mobile Crisis Team who were already at the home located at 8 Fair Oaks Drive.

Upon arrival, officers were informed that the suspect was inside the home and proceeded to make their way inside the residence. Once inside, officers encountered two male subjects, one of whom had already sustained a head injury. Soon after, police said a confrontation ensued between officers and the armed suspect, leading to an officer firing shots from his department-issued handgun, striking the armed suspect.

Suspect Killed in Poughkeepsie

Once the suspect was struck, officers began to administer aid according to the press release. He was then transported to a nearby local hospital for medical treatment, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Police didn't identify the officer involved or the suspect but did say that the investigation was turned over to the New York State Office of the Attorney General, which is being assisted by the New York State Police.
