New York has just been named one of the best places in the country for fun.

Most of us New Yorkers are well aware that we live in a state that has a lot to offer. Yes, where in New York you live matters, and so does how you define fun. If you live in Manhattan, you have access to Broadway shows, sporting events, shopping, and more, but you may miss out on really enjoying nature. If you live in the Hudson Valley, we are lucky to be surrounded by nature and have access to some of the best hiking and views anywhere. The same can be said for Upstate New York.

But how does New York stack up against other states when it comes to fun?

Most Fun States in the Nation

The folks at WalletHub recently compared all 50 states to determine which ones offer residents and visitors the most opportunities for fun. The study looked at two major categories: Entertainment & Recreation and Nightlife.

Those categories were then broken down into 26 different factors, including things like attractions, restaurants, recreational opportunities, and nightlife. Each state was given a score based on the number and variety of fun and affordable things available.

New York Named One of the Most Fun States

This year, New York came in at #5 overall, with a total score of 58.40. The Empire State ranked fourth in Entertainment & Recreation and an impressive third in Nightlife.

So, which states beat New York?

California took the No. 1 spot with a score of 67.35, followed by Florida at No. 2 with 64.14. Illinois came in third with 59.87, while Nevada ranked fourth with 58.76, followed by New York at No. 5.

And when you think about everything New York has to offer, it's really not that surprising.

From New York City and its endless entertainment options to the beaches of Long Island, the Adirondacks, the Finger Lakes and, of course, right here in the Hudson Valley, there are plenty of ways to have a good time.

And let's be honest, the Hudson Valley alone could probably make a pretty good case for why New York belongs near the top of this list, right?

The 5 Least Fun States in the U.S.

While New York landed near the top, five states found themselves at the opposite end of the rankings.

Here are the five least fun states in America:

  • Delaware
  • Arkansas
  • Vermont
  • Mississippi
  • West Virginia

Honestly, I'm a bit shocked by Delaware ranking near the bottom of the list. I've vacationed in Bethany Beach, Dewey, and Rehoboth many times and have always loved spending time there. Maybe I'm a little biased, but it's hard for me to believe Delaware is one of the least fun states in the country.

Then again, I guess that's the fun part about rankings like this. Everyone has a different idea of what makes a place fun.
