Expect More Police on Dutchess County Roads This Weekend

Drivers in Dutchess County are being warned that law enforcement agencies across the county will be stepping up patrols this weekend as part of a statewide crackdown on impaired driving.

As the Hudson Valley prepares to celebrate Labor Day this weekend, anyone who’s planning to celebrate with friends and family by having a few drinks should make sure they have a safe way to get home because law enforcement will be out in full force.

Police Stepping Up Patrols This Labor Day Weekend in Dutchess County, NY

Labor Day weekend is one of those weekends when many people are out enjoying one last summer getaway, heading to a barbecue, or meeting up with friends. Unfortunately, it can also mean more impaired drivers on the road.

According to Dutchess County Government, now through Monday, September 7, officers across the county will increase patrols and focus on identifying and removing intoxicated drivers from local roads.

Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino is reminding residents that celebrating safely should be part of everyone's plans.

“Labor Day is a time to celebrate our workforce and enjoy time with family and friends. Let’s celebrate safely and look out for one another. If you drink, please plan for a safe ride home. One smart choice can save a life.”

 

The increased enforcement is part of the statewide STOP-DWI campaign, which takes place during major holiday weekends throughout the year.

Driving Impaired is Deadly

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 511 people were killed in crashes across the country during the 2023 Labor Day holiday period. Alcohol was involved in more than one-third of those deaths. Nearly two-thirds of the fatalities involved drivers whose blood-alcohol levels were close to twice the legal limit.

While impaired driving fatalities have declined over the years, these crashes are still preventable.

If you plan on drinking this Labor Day weekend, officials are encouraging you to figure out how you’re getting home before the celebration even begins. Designate a sober driver, use public transportation, ask a friend for a ride, or use a rideshare service.
