Hyde Park Fire Department Urges Generator Safety After Thousands Lose Power

The Hudson Valley region has experienced some crazy summer weather over the last few weeks.

With that being said, it feels like perfect timing to review generator safety.

Hyde Park Fire Department Shares Power Outage Safety Tips

In the days following the 4th of July, 2026, tens of thousands of Hudson Valley residents were slowly getting electricity back after a dangerous storm blew through the region.

The Hyde Park Fire Department knows timing is everything and used the opportunity to share tips on how to keep your house and family safe while using a generator.

In the post the Hyde Park Fire Department writes "As we have over 1100 Hyde Park residents still without power. Please follow all the manufacturers recommendations and have working Carbon & Fire detectors."

They also add "We also ask that you unplug any electrical equipment ot protect your equipment from electrical surges."

Keep Your Family Safe While Running Generators

Additionally, the Hyde Park Fire Department shared an image with safety tips homeowners should keep in mind as they run generators.

Some of these generator safety tips include:

• Generators should be used in well ventilated locations outside at least 5 feet away from all doors, windows, and vent openings. Measure the 5-foot distance from generator exhaust system to the building.
• Make sure to install carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in your home. Follow manufacturer's instructions for correct placement and mounting height.

Dangerous Storm Rips Through the Hudson Valley on the 4th of July

As the BBQ parties began to wind down and Hudson Valley residents prepared for local fireworks show, the skies began to darken.

Around 7pm on July 4th, 2026, an intense thunderstorm ripped through the region. Strong winds, heavy downpours, thunder and lightening lit up the sky.

Dutchess County was hit hit the hardest with trees and power lines leaving behind a path of destruction. According to Central Hudson, over 37,000 people were left without power after the storm.
