Tornado Touches Down Near Finger Lakes

It's officially summer and the summer storms are already rolling through New York State.

While it isn't the first tornado of the 2026 season, a tornado recently touched down in Upstate, New York.

Caporizzo shared details from the Nation Weather Service who report that an EF-0 tornado has been confirmed in Cortland, New York. On the EF scale, wind speeds reach anywhere between 65 to 85 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service reports the estimate peak wind speed was 80 miles per hour.

EF-0 Tornado Blows Through Cortland, New York

According to the National Weather Service explains the EF-0 tornado touched down, briefly, "3.4 miles WSW of Cortland in Cortland County NY around 11:32 am."

How did they know it was a tornado? The NWS explains

Tree damage along the route was the most common type of
damage, with a swath of tree damage showing a convergent pattern,
which is indication of a brief tornado touching down.
As for damage, it was mostly large uprooted trees and large snapped trees. The National Weather service adds:
Going further east-northeast, further scattered tree damage was observed, but did not show a convergent pattern.

They say this indicates that the "brief tornado dissipated before heading into town, and was residual thunderstorm wind damage."
