Because of this recent first snowfall of the year, that means residents in New York will be popping up their windshield wiper blades overnight, so it's easier to clean and avoid excess ice in the morning. Many of us do this.

But did you know you shouldn't do that?

According to Dan Fisher, the assistant Buffalo fleet manager of AAA, popping up your wiper blades is a mistake.

"Windshield wipers are on springs, and leaving the blades up like that can stretch the springs over time, so they end up applying less pressure on the windshield, making them less effective."

My dad used to do this all the time, so this is information I'm sure many people didn't realize.

Maybe it's worth just taking the extra minute or two to get the ice off the wiper blades.

Other tips for battling the cold weather?

  • Not idling your car every day in the winter -- as that can cut short the lifespan of your car battery (I think most people know this, but hate cold vehicles).
  • You also shouldn't pour hot water on your frozen locks, as that will just create a new layer of ice. Do not do this.
  • Always have an emergency kit in your car and leave your snowbrush and scrapper in your vehicle at all times.
