Firefighters Battle Hazardous Weather Conditions Battling Wappingers Fire

The weather throughout the weekend leading up to January 18th was a wild one.

Several inches of snow fell throughout the say on January 17th, and after a brief reprieve, the snow began to fall again on the 18th.

The Chelsea Fire Company explains that when crews arrived on  the scene they were "met with hazardous weather conditions" as well as limited access to the heavy fire that was in the garage and on the second floor of the structure.

The location of the fire made access to a supply line difficult. The Chelsea Fire Department writes:

Due to the location of the structure a supply line was needed to be deployed from over 1,100 ft away to supply water for firefighting operations. A second alarm was requested bringing assistance from our neighboring fire departments.

They add:

The fire made its way into the attic area and due to the building’s construction and water supply factors the fire was able to over take the entire attic area.

After 7 hours in cold and icy conditions, the fire was officially declared out and crews were able to leave the scene on Diane Court. The Chelsea Fire Department thanked all of their mutual aid partners and Dutchess County Emergency Management.

Currently, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
