Not Quite Summer in the Hudson Valley

The first official day of summer 2026, is June 21st. However, the temperature is slowly creeping to July-like status.

In his latest newsletter Ben Noll, everyone's favorite meteorologist, writes:

I think it’s safe to say that summer is well and truly arriving in the Hudson Valley!

He goes on to say we can expect "wall-to-wall sunshine" to kick off the week "followed by progressively hotter conditions."

With that being said, we're not alone. Noll reports "Across the country, some 140 million people can expect temperatures in the 90s this week with 100-degree heat for around 20 million more."

With warmer weather, comes those summer thunderstorms. This past weekend a nasty storm blew through the Hudson Valley and left behind a path of destruction.

Intense Thunderstorm Blows Through the Hudson Valley

The mid-Hudson region was expecting rain on Saturday, June 6th, 2026.

As the day progressed, no rain came, but the prediction of rain became more intense. Sever thunderstorm warnings popped up across our screens.

Later in the afternoon strong winds, heavy rains, thunder, lightening and in some places hail fell from the skies.

Of course, weather like that brings along intense damage. Central Hudson followed up with a post on social media, they write:

Yesterday’s storm caused widespread damage from Kingston to Newburgh, and restoration is still underway.

They explain that they know how challenging life can be without power adding "Our crews remain focused on repairs, and we’re on track to restore power to the vast majority of customers by the end of the day."

First Tornado Touches Down in New York for 2026

While it's not totally uncommon, tornados are known to touch down every now and then across New York State.

So far there have been 3 tornados that have officially touched down so far this season in New York.

The first tornado was reported on March 31st, 2026 that landed in Machias near Buffalo. The tornado brough 107 mph winds, had a maximum width of 200 yards and left a 1.4-mile path of debris.

Weather.gov reports that it was a EF-1.

An EF-0 touched down a few weeks later on April 15th, 2026 nearby in southwest of Machias. The tornado touched down briefly for 0.17 miles and produced 75 mph winds.

That same day another tornado touched down in the Town of Farmersville a few towns over from Machias.

Will we have a record-breaking tornado season this year? The last time NY broke a tornado record was in 2024, with 27 official tornadoes.
