Three Hudson Valley towns have made the top 10 best places for moviemakers to live and work.
If you haven't noticed, the Hudson Valley has quickly become one of the most filmed regions in New York with numerous movies and TV shows filming in all corners of the area. Almost every month there's a report of a show or movie filming somewhere in the Hudson Valley, with the most recent happening in Orange County, NY as the Paramount movie company started filming the sequel to the movie "Smile".
Best Places to Live and Work as a Moviemaker
There are a thousand choices when it comes to where a moviemaker decides to film/live and when the folks at Moviemaker released its list of the "Best Places to Live and Work as a Moviemaker" it was no surprise that a few Hudson Valley towns/city's made an appearance in the top 10 of the best small towns/cities to live and film. Moviemaker not only looked at locations for filming it also weighed factors including the cost of living, quality of life in the area, and surveys taken by film officials.
Moviemakers Love the Hudson Valley
Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, and Kingston, New York together grabbed the #10 spot of the Best Places to Live and Work as a Moviemaker in 2023 citing numerous projects that have already been done in the area. NBC Universal’s The Endgame, Apple’s Invasion and Severance, Showtime’s The First Lady, and HBO Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls were all filmed in Poughkeepsie, NY. Newburgh has seen shows like Peacock's show Poker Face, HBO’s The White House Plumbers, and Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale all filmed in the area. Kingston has been the backdrop for numerous productions including Netflix’s Manifest, HBO’s Full Circle, and The Undoing, and a few others.
A big reason moviemakers choose the Hudson Valley is that the area benefits from "New York’s 25% tax credit on below-the-line costs, and an additional 10% on below-the-line labor" according to the website.
