The Band Perry Says ‘The Good Life’ Tells a True Cheating Story, But J.P. Arencibia Denies It
J.P. Arencibia, former professional baseball catcher and ex-husband of the Band Perry frontwoman Kimberly Perry, had some strong words for the group's new single, "The Good Life," in a statement delivered to People on Friday (July 12).
"The Good Life" (which also dropped on Friday) strongly implies that Arencibia cheated on Perry during their marriage, and doesn't mince words to address that infidelity. "I'm not gonna be a joke / I know about your sidepiece, bro / I'm not gonna fight anymore," the song's first verse says, kicking off with a bang. "Glad I never had your baby / This'll be a cleaner cut / You can keep the Labradors."
Furthermore, in an Instagram post, Perry explained that the story told in "The Good Life" does indeed come from personal experience. "The song that is coming out tonight is one that I needed to make to remind myself that my life is not defined by one ugly situation, my body is not diminished by one uninterested person and my self-worth is not determined by anyone else's words or behavior," she wrote.
However, Arencibia denies that any infidelity took place during his marriage to Perry. "While matters of our relationship and what let to the demise of our marriage should remain between us, I will say that there was no infidelity," he stated to People.
Furthermore, Arencibia implied that the allegation of infidelity was intended as a PR stunt. "It's a shame that all of this is now being made up to promote an album, I have moved on and hopefully one day she can as well," he added.
In a since-deleted post, Arencibia responded to Perry's original message with harsher words on Friday. Taste of Country reports that he also shared what appeared to be a series of text messages with ex-Band Perry insiders, portraying the Perry family as unreasonable and motivated by self-interest.
"It's sad that at 36 years of age today, a person would try to revive a dying career with click bait. Well, here's just a little taste of reality to a woman and family that are not in touch with it," Arencibia wrote in a caption alongside the screenshots.
Arencibia and Perry divorced in March of 2018 after four years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences for the reason behind their split. The couple initially met in 2012 at the Florida Strawberry Festival.
