A serious sexually transmitted disease (STD) is affecting more residents in the Hudson Valley.

Gonorrhea cases in Putnam County have been increasing. According to Putnam County's website, cases of the STD increased by 60% in 2017. In 2016, there was a severe syphilis increase, by 125%. Unlike most STDs, gonorrhea can be cured, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

Putnam County warns that is anyone is at risk for STDs, but specifically, people 15-24, gay and bisexual men, and pregnant women are at a higher risk. Like gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis can also be cured, according to the CDC.

The only way to know you have an STD is to get tested. Primary care doctors can provide these tests. Putnam County's free health care center also provides most tests for free, according to the article.

April is National STD Awareness month. Chlamydia is the most common STD in the country, according to the article. Gonorrhea is the second most common, and syphilis is the third.
