Spring is here and while we're all ready to get out there and enjoy the warm weather, so are the amphibians.

This time of year, throughout the Hudson Valley is amphibian migration season!

Amphibian Migrations & Road Crossing Project Returns to the Hudson Valley

Earlier this week, as the temperatures dropped and the rain has begun to fall, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced the start of the "annual migrations of vernal pool breeding amphibians."

For 17 years during this time the DEC runs the Amphibian Migrations and Road Crossings Project in the Hudson Valley.  Volunteers placed at different road locations observe and document migrations, record weather and traffic conditions, identify and count amphibians as they migrate.

These volunteers also "carefully help the amphibians safely cross roads."

According to the DEC, since the project began 17 years ago, 24,000 migrating amphibians have been killed by passing vehicles.

What Amphibians Will be Migrating Across the Hudson Valley?

In a press release, the DEC reports that over the years volunteers have documented 20 species and counted over 58,000 live amphibians.

The DEC's acting Commissioner Amanda Lefton explains in a statement:

“Every year, DEC’s Amphibian Migrations and Road Crossings Project draws hundreds of volunteers to help protect salamanders and frogs on the move in the Hudson Valley, migrating from forests to vernal pools"

Commissioner Lefton goes on to thanks the volunteers who are a part of the program and encourages "anyone traveling roads this time of year to be on the lookout for these vulnerable amphibians to help keep them safe."

So what kind of amphibians are seen migrating across the Hudson Valley? The DEC reports during night migrations they see spotted salamander, wood frogs, and spring peepers.
