National Popcorn Day- January 19th, 2026

The holidays are long gone, and there's not much to look forward to in January. However, if you're looking for something to celebrate save the date: January 19th, 2026.

According to the National Day Calendar, January 19th is National Popcorn Day. While there isn't a specific reason why this holiday falls on January 19th, I don't think any one is complaining...right?

Who doesn't love popcorn?!

NationalDayCalendar.com explains that popcorn dates back to the 16th century. The Aztecs "used popcorn in headdresses worn during ceremonies honoring Tlaloc, their god of maize and fertility."

Popcorn then made its way to the U.S. in the 1800s. Later, candy store owner Charles Cretors created the popcorn machine and by the 1900s there were horse drawn popcorn wagons traveling around the streets of Chicago.

Now in 2026, a Hudson Valley movie theater is celebrating popcorn in a big way on National Popcorn Day.

Roosevelt Cinemas Celebrates National Popcorn Day BYOB Style

A local movie theater is going all out to celebrate National Popcorn Day.

Roosevelt Cinemas in Hyde Park, who is known for their delicious popcorn and huge portions that you could buy while viewing in the theater or to take home, is giving popcorn fans options.

According to the Roosevelt Cinemas Facebook page, on Monday January 19th, they will give guests a FREE small popcorn with paid admission.

OR...and here's where things get fun, BYOB - Bring Your Own Bucket. If you bring your own bucket they'll fill it for just $5. Buckets can be up to 400 oz. (in volume not weight) with paid admission.

Additionally, they will have Popcorn to Go too. A giant bag of popcorn from Roosevelt Cinemas will be $2, max of 5 bags per customer.

Enjoy Locally Popped Hudson Valley Popcorn

Obviously, Roosevelt Cinemas in Hyde Park is a great place to grab a bucket of freshly popped popcorn, but did you know there are a few local businesses that specialize in gourmet popcorn?

Hudson Valley Gourmet Popcorn in the 9 Mall Plaza in Wappingers (where Kohl's and Aldi are located) recently opened their doors. They make a wide array of specialty popcorns with flavors like Ranch, Xtra Hot Wing, Pistachio and Tutti Frutti.

Adams Fairacre Farms in Wappingers Falls has a whole section of their store dedicated to popcorn.

Flavors like Birthday Cake, Cookies and Cream, Pizza and many other classics are available.

These Are The 23 Drive-In Theaters Left In NY State

New York State has the highest drive-in movie theater screens in the country. That means there's probably one not too far from wherever you are. There are a handful here in the Capital Region.
Back in the swinging '60s, drive-in theaters were all the rage, with over 4,000 scattered across the country and a whopping one hundred fifty right here in New York State alone. But times have changed, and now only twenty-three of these nostalgic gems are left in New York State. Check them out.
