Plastic Grocery Bag Ban on “Pause”
The on again, off again ban is now on....pause.
If you remember back on a while ago, the talk of the Hudson Valley and pretty much the entire state of New York was that we were no longer going to be able to get those single use plastic bags when we checkout at most retail stores.
The state wide plastic bag ban started back on March 1st and it prevented stores from allowing customers to use those single use plastic bags to bag up there merchandise after checking out. When the ban went into effect, one of the bag companies filled a lawsuit saying the ban was unconstitutional and the DEC agreed to hold off on fining stores that used the bags for a while and then of course that all changed again when the coronavirus pandemic started.
One thing I've noticed at the grocery store that I shop at is that they are offering plastic bags to customers who don't have their own. When I asked the cashier about the bags she told me that "we are allowed to give them out because of the pandemic" and they didn't want people to bring their bags from home "because of the germs and the spreading of the virus." If you're like me, I'm confused.
So where are we with the bag ban?
According to News 13, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation has announced that the plastic bag ban will not be enforced until June 15th and could be extended even longer depending on where the state is with the pandemic.
