Photos Capture The Beauty Of New Ashokan Rail Trail
The new Ashokan Rail Trail opened to the public Friday and it appears it was worth the wait. In the works since 2012, a nine-mile portion of the eventual 11.5 mile trail was accessible to the public for the first time this week.
The trail runs along the northern edge of the Ashokan Reservoir between Basin Road in West Hurley and Route 28A in Boiceville. The additional 2.5-mile section of trail that is not yet open, is expected to be ready in December.
Do you plan on going hiking at the new Ashokan Rail Trail? Just keep in mind it's for non-motorized use only. Hiking, bicycling, running, cross country skiing and snowshoeing are all allowed. Dogs area also allowed on the trail.
The ART was developed by Ulster County in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Protection who owns and operates the reservoir and surrounding lands.
