Rock Hill Fire Department’s Strong Warning About the Neversink River
Ever since I was a kid, I have been one of those people who enjoys exploring and discovering places that few others have been before me. I am definitely the off-the-beaten-path type. When I drive somewhere, it is all back roads and the long way around.
Two Important Things You Need To Do Before Heading on an Adventure
It is important, though, that if you are an adventurer, you also think about what you want to do and where you want to go. You should always have a plan and always let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return. That is rule one of adventuring. Rule two is never to put others in danger.
What I mean by never put others in danger is don't go doing something that may cause others, such as Rangers or Environmental Police, to have to do risky things to come to your aid if you get in trouble. The fact is, things happen on well-traveled trails every day that require professionals to be called in when help is needed. Always keep in mind that you could run into trouble, so for that reason, follow the trails and cautions posted for your safety.

A perfect example is what the Rock Hill Fire Department shared from one of their firefighters, Ron Lindholm, on social media. They made it very clear that there is a part of the Neversink River that no one should kayak or tube on ever. There are signs posted and a warning, which, quite frankly, is pretty direct; it says, "You Could Die".
It Is Dangerous to Go Past Holiday Mountain on the Neversink River
Basically, the post on Facebook states that Ron says no one should go beyond Holiday Mountain on the Neversink River. According to Ron, beyond that point is the Neversink Gorge. It is remote and a dangerous stretch of the river. It has steep valleys, no cell service, and not one but two hazardous waterfalls.
Suppose someone had to be rescued from this area; access is extremely limited. It would take time for rescuers to reach you if you had an emergency. Ron and other safety officials are asking that you adhere to the warning signs and stay safe on the water. There is no reason to go beyond that point.
Rock Hill Fire Department is Trained in Swiftwater Rescue
The Rock Hill Fire Department recently did training for water rescues, but there is much they can do if you are in a spot they can't reach, or worse, an area where you can't call for help. Even though the outdoor season is coming to a close for 2025, you may still find yourself out on a trail or a path this winter. Please follow all safety precautions; it could be the difference between life and death for both you and the person who would have to save you.
