Members of the New York State Police Aviation Unit assisted in rescuing three victims who were involved in a small engine plane crash Wednesday.

Plane Crash in Vermont

According to ABC News, at approximately 3:50 a.m. Wednesday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that a small plane had crashed into the side of a snowy mountain in Vermont. The FAA stated that three people were on board the Piper PA-28 when it crashed on the side of Mount Equinox in Manchester, Vermont.

Pilot Calls 911

The pilot of the plane reportedly called 911 at 8:33 a.m. to report the crash, saying that all three people onboard sustained non-life-threatening injuries and requested help. First responders from various departments were dispatched to the scene and after working in 4 feet of snow to reach the victims, the rescue began.

Dramatic Helicopter Rescue by New York State Police

At 9:20 a.m., New York State Police (NYSP) Aviation received a call about the crash and were asked to assist in rescue efforts. Thankfully, two NYSP pilots, a Trooper and two Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Forest Rangers were preparing for a day of "hoist" training out of nearby Albany International Airport and were able to pilot a helicopter to the crash scene and begin rescue efforts.

Forest Rangers Gullen and Thompson, along with pilots Anderton and Sperber and Trooper Aurigena arrived on the scene at 12:15 p.m. and were able to hoist each of the victims into the helicopter. Part of the amazing rescue was caught on video and shared by the DEC.

An ambulance transported two of the patients to a nearby hospital. The third patient was airlifted to Albany Medical Center for further evaluation.

How Did Passengers Survive a Crash Like This?

"The snow helped cushion the fall," said Jamie Greene, the first assistant chief at the Manchester Fire Department. The cause of the crash is unclear at this time, but the FAA is investigating. When more information becomes available, we will update this article.
