New York State Police Announce Unexpected Death
The New York State Police have announced the unexpected passing of one of its K9 officers.
It's a sad day in New York law enforcement as the New York State Police (NYSP) has shared unfortunate news on social media notifying the community of the passing of K9 Lock. "It is with deep regret and sadness that the New York State Police at Troop 'C' announces the unexpected death of K9 Lock" according to Facebook.
New York State Police K9 Lock Dies
9 and a half-year-old K9 Lock passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 4, 2024, from an undisclosed illness according to the post. K9 Lock along with his faithful partner Trooper Jamie M. Gockel worked together out of the State Police Barracks in Oneonta, Sidney, Kingston, and Catskill. K9 Lock was trained in explosives detection, tracking, and handler protection and was named after Sergeant John H. Lockhart who died on March 23, 1937, after succumbing to a head injury as a result of a fall during a burglary call at a drugstore.
K9 Lock Saluted
As you can see in the picture above K9 Lock was saluted by fellow Troopers on Saturday outside an area veterinary clinic. Troopers, along with members of the community expressed love and support for Trooper Gockel during this difficult time.

K9 Lock was one of the 103 New York State Police Canine Unit teams with 99 of them being full-service dogs with a detection specialty, and the remaining 4 are bloodhounds according to the NYSP website. Similar to Lock, all New York State Police canines are named in honor of the men and women of the state police who have died in the line of duty.
