Families in New York Could See $1,700 Refunds Soon
New York Governor Kathy Hochul is once again calling on the Trump administration to refund New York families roughly $1,700.
Back in February, Hochul announced that her office had asked the administration to return an estimated $13.5 billion in tariff payments to New Yorkers following a Supreme Court decision that overturned the tariffs. This week, she doubled down on that request, saying families deserve that money back.
Refunds For New York Families
Hochul, who first made the request on February 24, 2026, said the average New York household has been hit with about $1,751 in added costs due to the tariffs since they were put in place last year. Altogether, that adds up to an estimated $13.5 billion impact statewide.
“These senseless and illegal tariffs were just a tax on New York consumers, small businesses, and farmers — and that’s why I’m demanding a full refund,” Hochul said. “I’ll never stop fighting for New Yorkers, and that means staying focused on putting more money back in your pockets — not ripping it away.”
Governor Kathy Hochul Wants Refunds
According to 7 News, Hochul repeated that call on Monday while speaking in Upstate New York, as the federal government begins accepting refund applications from businesses impacted by the tariffs. Reports indicate more than $160 billion could ultimately be paid back to businesses nationwide.
“I’m not gonna stop fighting for those families to get relief — everyday New Yorkers, farmers, and families,” Hochul said. “People just trying to buy groceries and go about their lives are paying more because of an illegal tariff scheme. They deserve their money back, and we’re going to keep fighting for that. We’re in court working to secure it as well.”

Businesses looking to claim a refund can file online through U.S. Customs and Border Protection. If approved, the agency estimates it could take anywhere from 60 to 90 days for claims to be sent.
It’s unclear when New York families might start receiving refunds, but when that information becomes available, we will update this article.
