Does the punishment fit the crime?

Yes having a fake ID is a crime but is spending a week in jail for getting caught the right punishment?

According to the Times Herald Record, 20 year old Jery Almonte was arrested in New Paltz early Thanksgiving morning while he walked along Main Street in the Village drinking an alcoholic drink. New Paltz Police told the Record that that is a violation of a village ordinance.

Once police stopped Almonte, they found out that he was not only violating the village ordinance, he was drinking underage and also had a forged Pennsylvania driver’s license.

Almote was arrested and charged with the class D felony of criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, and the violation of consuming an alcoholic beverage on village lands.

He was sent to Ulster County Jail on Thnaksgiving on $500 bail and is still in jail today.

Is a week in jail a bit much for the crime of having a fake ID? Let us know in the comment section below.
