Sheriff's K-9 Dies After Heat Exhaustion in Schenectady County, New York

The Schenectady County Sheriff's Office has announced that K-9 Leonidas, an eight-year veteran of the department, has died after suffering heat exhaustion.

According to WRGB, the tragedy happened on Thursday, July 2, 2026. A preliminary investigation found that the alarm system inside Leonidas' patrol vehicle—designed to alert officers if the vehicle or its climate control system malfunctioned—never activated.

The apparent equipment failure came during one of the hottest stretches of the year and tragically played a part in Leonidas' death. Officials are now working to determine exactly what went wrong.

"Leonidas was not just a working dog; he was a protector, a dedicated public servant, and a beloved member of our law enforcement family."

The sheriff also said the department's immediate focus is supporting Deputy Coppola as he mourns the loss of his longtime partner while investigators conduct a thorough review of the apparent mechanical and technological failures that may have contributed to the tragedy.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials say they'll release more information as it becomes available. We'll update this article if and when those details are released. Rest in Peace!
