Swimmer Goes Missing on Delaware River

It was a hot one across the region over the first few weeks in July 2026. With that many folks headed to local bodies of water to cool down.

On the 4th of July 2026, the Matamoras and Westfall Dive Team were dispatch to "a report of two people in the Delaware River without life jackets."

Right after the City of Port Jervis Fire Department and Orange County "resources were also requested under mutual aid." In a statement posted to social media the Matamoras Fire Department shared that "while en route" they learned that one person was now missing in the river.

The statement continues:
As crews searched the river, the Matamoras boat made contact with the missing person’s friends, who reported that he had gone under the water and they feared the worst.

4th of July Delaware River Water Rescue and Recovery

The search on the water "immediately shifted to a possible water rescue/recovery."

Thankfully, responders learned that the missing swimmer had been located "approximately one mile downstream after being pulled from the river by others."

All the swimmers were reunited and it turned into an emotional moment. The statement reads:

The emotional reunion that followed was one that will not soon be forgotten. Believing they had lost their friend, they broke down in tears, hugging him in overwhelming relief. It was a powerful reminder of how quickly the Delaware River can change lives in a matter of seconds.

A job well done by all first responders involved from the Matamoras Fire Department, Westfall Township Fire Department, Port Jervis Fire Department, Sparrowbush Fire Department, Orange County mutual aid resources and Pike County Communications.

Cool Off and Take a Dip at These Local Swimming Pools in the Hudson Valley

There’s nothing quite like taking a dip in a swimming pool during the warm summer months. The first toe dip, the laps across the pool and sunshine beaming on you as you relax in a float are all things I look forward to.

I don’t have a pool but I have friends who do have their own swimming pool. However, schedules don’t always match up for a swim date. I have been to local swimming pools before and I believe it’s such a smart idea that different counties and towns have this as an option.
