New York Zoo Announces Two New Animal Ambassadors

The Trailside Museums and Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park is a wonderful spot to spend a Fall day with family and friends. As a matter of fact, the zoo just announced the addition of two new animals to the animal ambassador list at the zoo.

You are invited to come and meet Coriander and Sage, both Striped Skunks, who are the newest additions to the zoo's family of animals that call the Trailside Museums and Zoo home. Coriander and Sage come to the zoo from Ohio.

How Did Two Skunks End Up At the Bear Mountain Zoo

Both of these adorable critters were rescued from a fur farm where, according to the Trailside Museums and Zoo's Facebook page, they and over 200 other animals were being inhumanely raised for their pelts, urine, and the exotic pets trade.

Being that Coriander and Sage were raised in captivity, they aren't able to be released to the wild, so they will now call the zoo their home. The Zoo regularly takes in wildlife that has been rescued and can't return to their natural habitat.

Sage, our female, has the classic black and white markings of a skunk with a white “chip” on her knees. Coriander, our male, has chocolate fur with the classic skunk stripe. While the most common color of skunks is the classic black and white, wild skunks exhibit natural color variations. (via Trailside Museums and Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park)

Can The New Skunks Spray The Zoo Visitors

Also, if you are wondering, both Coriander and Sage were descended before they arrived at The Zoo, so there's no worry about getting sprayed if you visit. However, you may need to be patient with Sage; she is still sticking to her nocturnal habits, which is natural skunk behavior. Coriander, on the other hand, is happy to greet people day or night.
